POP G to Perform on Kimmel Center See Hear! Series

The program also includes: Respighi’s Ancient airs and dances, No. 1, 1st movement; Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons (Spring); Laven’s A Barnraising; Morales-Matos’ Capture; Debussy, Clair de Lune; Ravel, Selections from The Mother Goose Suite; Morales-Matos’ Little Rhumba; and Jennifer Higdon’s Zones.
Several of the works in POP G’s performance will be accompanied by visual images either taken from archival sources or created specifically for this concert. Jennifer Higdon’s Zones, which was performed at the Kimmel Center last season as the centerpiece of an event sponsored by the Free Library of Philadelphia and the City of Philadelphia as part of the One Book, One Philadelphia program, will be accompanied by new video commissioned by the Kimmel Center from Harold Kalmus, whose company Faux Real, is based in Arden, Delaware.
Regular tickets for POP G are $36 and $26, and can be purchased by calling 215-893-1999, online or at the Kimmel Center Box Office, open daily from 10am to 6pm and later on performance evenings. (Additional fees may apply) For group sales call 215-893-5883.
A limited number of $10 tickets are available for every Kimmel Center Presents performance at the Kimmel Center. Tickets go on sale the day of the event and can be purchased at the Kimmel Center Box Office beginning 2.5 hours prior to evening performances and 11:30am for matinees.
The Philadelphia Orchestra Percussion Group was created in the Spring of 2000 with the goal of engaging children and increasing the involvement of all audiences. An ensemble of great energy, POPG has a repertoire that ranges from Debussy to Morales-Matos. POPG is a captivating ensemble of passionate professionals that truly reaches out to the community with its riveting rhythms and infectious enthusiasm.
Charlotte Blake Alston is a Philadelphia-based storyteller, narrator, and singer. Her interest in literature, arts, and the oral tradition was highly influenced by her father and she received training from Djimo Kouyate. Alston’s diverse performances cater to all ages and her stories are often aurally illustrated with the sound of traditional instruments such as the djembe, berimbau, mbira, or the 21-stringed kora. She was honored with the Pew Fellowship in the Arts in 1994, was selected as Philadelphia Magazine’s “Best of Philly” in 1995, and received The Hazlett Memorial Award in 1997.
