Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts

Kimmel Center Presents Concert Schedule Updates
October 6, 2006

Please note the following changes to the Kimmel Center Presents 2006-07 season schedule:

Värttinä, originally scheduled for September 2006 has been rescheduled to make their debut on the Kimmel Center Presents Planet World Series on January 18, 2007 at 7:30pm. Värttinä, now celebrating their 20th anniversary, is Finland's most successful contemporary folk music group, and is recognized for inventing a roots-based vocal/instrumental style that is unlike anything Finland has heard before their arrival on the scene. Effortlessly blending ancient Finnish runo poetry, distinctive Finno-Ugric vocal harmonies, traditional and contemporary acoustic instrumentation, complex and uncommon rhythms, original and highly imaginative compositions and arrangements plus a front line of four dynamic female singers, Värttinä has made eight groundbreaking albums and toured for more than a decade. Värttinä has also written the score for "Lord of the Rings—The Musical."

Tickets for Värttinä, are $34 and $44 and can be purchased by calling 215-893-1999, online at www.kimmelcenter.org, or at the Kimmel Center box office, open daily from 10am to 6pm and later on performance evenings. (Additional fees may apply). For group sales call 215-893-5883.

Due to illness, Toots Thielmans has cancelled his North American tour. He is being replaced by jazz violinist Regina Carter and her Quintet, who will share the evening with previously announced jazz legend McCoy Tyner and his Septet on Friday, November 17 in Verizon Hall.

As a 2006 recipient of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation "Genius Grant," Regina Carter's career has been a veritable crescendo of success that shows no sign of letting up. She is on a mission: to make a meaningful musical contribution and do it on her own terms. Indeed, she tours with relentless purpose and a seemingly endless supply of energy. Over the past four years, Ms. Carter and her quintet have brought audiences to their feet with exhilarating performances worldwide. Her recent album I'll Be Seeing You: A Sentimental Journey, was released in June 2006.

Tickets for the Mellon Jazz Fridays McCoy Tyner Septet and Regina Carter Quintet performance are $26, $46, $59, $64, and $74 and can be purchased by calling 215-893-1999, online at www.kimmelcenter.org, or at the Kimmel Center box office, open daily from 10am to 6pm and later on performance evenings. (Additional fees may apply). For group sales call 215-893-5883.
