Kimmel Center Adds New Art & Architecture Tour to Its Free Tours Schedule
October 9, 2006

The Kimmel Center's new Art and Architecture tour includes a view of Stuart Netsky's "Haystacks" on the First Tier.
The Kimmel Center for the Arts today announced the formation of a new weekly Art and Architecture Tour exploring the Kimmel Center's art and architecture and that of selected sites along the Avenue of the Arts, beginning Saturday, October 21. Led by a team of experienced volunteers with a deep knowledge of the Kimmel Center and the Avenue, the new weekly tours are offered on Saturday mornings at 10:30am. Members of the public are invited to sign up for these free excursions, which depart from the Information Desk located in Commonwealth Plaza.
Tour attendees can expect to hear about the construction and architecture of the Kimmel Center, the public art contained in the Center, as well as architectural highlights along the Avenue of the Arts. Walking tours last approximately one and a half hours, and include the plaza areas of multi-level Kimmel Center, which encompasses an entire city block, as well as significant historical landmarks on Broad Street.
The Kimmel Center installed works by five prominent Philadelphia artists on permanent display in April 2006 as part of the Philadelphia Public Art Program, including: Moe A. Brooker, Everything is on Its Way to Somewhere; Fritz Dietel, Twist; Sidney Goodman, Angel; Stuart Netsky, Monet's Haystacks; and Elizabeth Osborne, Oracle I.
Other two and three dimensional works enrich the already vibrant public space, including works by current and former Moore College faculty and students and Eight Figures by Philadelphia artist Arlene Love--a sculpture of eight life-size female figures cast in bronze. Eight Figures a gift to the Kimmel Center from William Hollis and Andrea Baldeck.
Nearly one million people pass through the Kimmel Center each year, and the works are viewable to the public during the Center's nearly 700 yearly events. To sign up for tours, visitors can call 215-790-5830 or sign up online at www.kimmelcenter.org.
Tours are filled on a first-come, first-served basis and are limited to 20 persons per tour. Visitors may register for tours at the Information Desk, which opens at 10am daily. Free guided tours for group tours for groups of 12 or more are available by advance reservation. Group tours are offered Tuesday through Friday at 1:15pm.
