Grammy® - Award Winning Ensemble Sweet Honey In The Rock® Performs on Kimmel Center Presents World Pop Mix Series on Sunday, November 5

Now entering their fourth decade together, Grammy®- Award winning ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock® will bring their collective voices together on the Kimmel Center Presents World Pop Mix Series in Verizon Hall on Sunday, November 5, 2006 at 3pm. Known for creating soulful harmonies and intricate rhythms that capture the complex sounds of Blues, spirituals, gospel hymns, rap and reggae, this female a cappella ensemble's vocal prowess ignites a flurry of dynamic energy throughout their performance. Occasionally accompanied by hand percussion instruments, their vast repertoire of music evokes a calling for social justice everywhere. Like their name, their music holds true and permeates with sweet honey—the ancient sweet sustenance that nurtures existence; and rock, the elemental strength that endures the winds of time.
Tickets for Sweet Honey In The Rock® range from $69, $59, $46, $35 and can be purchased by calling 215-893-1999, online at www.kimmelcenter.org or at the Kimmel Center Box Office, open daily from 10am to 6pm and later on performance evenings. A limited number of $10 tickets are available for every Kimmel Center Presents performances at the Kimmel Center. Tickets go on sale the day of the event and can be purchased the 2 .5 hours prior to evening performances and 11:30am for matinees.
Sweet Honey in the Rock® is the seventh concert in the World Pop Mix series. The next performance in this series is Dennis De Young and the Music of Styx with Rock Symphony on Sunday, November 19, 2006 at 7:30pm.
Internationally renowned Sweet Honey in the Rock® started as an all-female African American a cappella vocal group in 1973. A vital, innovative presence in the music culture of Washington D.C., Sweet Honey in the Rock® became a part of the social conscience of local communities and an inspiration for social change. The ensemble brings messages of hope and love, justice and peace through soulful sounds and rhythms using musical ranges from gospel, rap and reggae, to African chants, Hip Hop, ancient lullabies and jazz improvisation. With more than 20 albums to date, the group has evolved with the changing times, commenting on the issues and situations that are important to communities across the globe. Rooted in African American legacy and tradition, Sweet Honey in the Rock's® music is steeped in the sacred music of the Black church, their performances taking on a lively atmosphere.
In 2004, Sweet Honey in the Rock’s® founding member, Bernice Johnson, retired. The group continues to entertain audiences across the globe. In 2005, Sweet Honey was featured in PBS’ American Masters documentary series. Emmy award-winning Stanley Nelson profiled the group in Sweet Honey in the Rock®: Raise Your Voice.
Kimmel Center Presents also offers more than fifty Free at the Kimmel community performances during the 2006/07 5th Anniversary season. These include Free in the Plaza with local artists performing classical, jazz, pop, country, world, dance and family fun on the Commonwealth Plaza stage, as well as Artist Chats with Kimmel Center Presents performers, education events and Organ Postludes in Verizon Hall. On November 1 at 6:30pm, the Haddonfield Symphony Chamber Ensemble will precede the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra ticketed performance, and immediately after the concert organist Gordon Turk will perform a free organ postlude on the Fred J. Cooper Memorial Organ. On November 5 at 1pm Tribe 1 will perform on the Commonwealth Plaza Stage. Please check online for additional information and a performance schedule.
