Artist Chats, Free in the Plaza Performances, and Organ Postludes Continue to Celebrate Kimmel Center’s 5th Anniversary Season

Kimmel Center Presents’ Free at the Kimmel events continue throughout January and February during its 2006/07 season with more than 50 free events and performances to take place throughout the Center. Free at the Kimmel includes: Free in the Plaza with local artists performing classical, jazz, pop, country, world, dance and family fun on the Commonwealth Plaza stage; as well as Artist Chats with Kimmel Center Presents performers; education events in the Merck Arts Education Center; and Organ Preludes and Postludes on The Fred J. Cooper Memorial Organ in Verizon Hall. Updates and complete schedules are available at www.kimmelcenter.org. All artists and programs are subject to change.

Fifth Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute
The Kimmel Center’s Fifth Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute will feature performances by more than 100 talented young singers, dancers and musicians, including The Kimmel Center Middle Jazz School Ensemble, the Concert Choir from the School District of Philadelphia’s Girard Academic Music Program, PHILADANCO’s apprentice company – D 2, and William Carter, a recent graduate of Creative and Performing Arts High School who will be accompanied by his gospel ensemble.

Pedrick-Smith Guitar Duo
In September 2002 Thomas Smith’s composition "River Rising" was premiered by the Pedrick Hutson guitar duo at the Philly Fringe Festival. Since then, the duo has recorded the piece for their CD Environs, and have extensively performed throughout the United States for guitar societies, concert series, and music festivals. Their music encompasses a variety of styles, including classical, jazz and world sounds. Prior to the ticketed Joshua Bell performance in Verizon Hall.

Magauwane Mahloele
Accomplished in the making and playing of a wide range of traditional instruments, Magauwane Mahloele performed at the Philadelphia Live Arts Fringe Festival in September 2004. His style ranges from African to avante garde, and his art is a unique style of world music using instruments such as the kora, the mbira, and the djembe drum. Prior to the ticketed performance of the Soweto Gospel Choir and the Mahotella Queens in Verizon Hall.
