Dulce Pontes Performs Portuguese Fado at the Kimmel Center’s Perelman Theater on May 5
April 24, 2007

"[Pontes] will please lovers of passionate fado-as well as many who have never explored this delicate yet potent genre." —Philadelphia City Paper

One of the most well known and respected Portuguese voices, Dulce Pontes will perform Portuguese fado at the Kimmel Center’s Perelman Theater on Saturday, May 5 at 7:30pm. Pontes has been considered the successor of Amália Rodrigues with her ability to infuse new meaning in fado, an emotive, regenerative source of Portuguese music that is best heard through live performance. The 2006 release of O Coração Tem Três Portas ("The Heart Has Three Doors") is Pontes’ eighth album and her first produced album that combines Portuguese popular music, folklore, medieval music and fado of Coimbra. She has collaborated with Italian composer Ennio Morricone, Brazilian singer Caetano Veloso, Andrea Bocelli, Cesária Évora, and jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter.

Tickets for Dulce Pontes are $36 and $46 and can be purchased by calling 215-893-1999, online at www.kimmelcenter.org, or at the Kimmel Center box office, open daily from 10pm to 6pm and later on performance evenings. (Additional fees may apply.) For group sales call 215-790-5883.

A limited number of $10 tickets are available for every Kimmel Center Presents performance at the Kimmel Center. Tickets go on sale the day of the event and can be purchased at the Kimmel Center box office beginning 2.5 hours prior to curtain time and 11:30am for matinees. Limit one ticket per person.

Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho has said of Pontes’ 2003 release of Focus: "…This album holds the mystery of things that have never been said out loud. It urges us to share them with the ones we love, but also with the rest of the silent and intense universe that surrounds us."

Dulce Pontes has performed live in mythic stages such as the Royal Albert Hall in London, Arena di Verona in Rome, the Milano Mazda Palace and Tokyo International Forum Hall. She first established her career as a Portuguese Fado singer in 1991 when she reached 8th place in the Eurovision Song Contest. The song "Lusitana Paixao" followed with her first recording called Lusitana (1992). In 1993, the CD Lágrimas caught world wide attention with the song "Cancao do Mar" featured in the film Primal Fear. It became one of Portugal’s best-selling albums of all time. Additional CDs include A Brisa do Coração ("Three Doors of the Heart" 1995), Caminhos (1996), and O Primeiro Canto (1999), all of which reveal Pontes’ multi-faceted talent and ability to infuse new life in traditional folkloric and popular songs. Her career has been marked with non-stop world wide tours and collaborations with Andrea Bocelli, Jose Carreras, Cesária Évora, Caetano Veloso, Daniela Mercury, Simone, Marisa Monte, Carlos Nunez, The Chieftains, and Eleftheria Arvanitaki. Her creative partnership with Ennio Morricone marked the release of Focus (2003).
