Kimmel Center Presents Launches New Podcast Series Introducing String Quartet Ethel October 13 Performance
September 26, 2007

"Kimmelcast" Podcast series of conversations with Fresh Ink performers launches on Kimmel Center Blog and on iTunes
"The fiercest string quartet this side of hell" (Guardian, UK), Ethel returns to the Kimmel Center on Saturday, October 13, 2007 at 7:30pm in Perelman Theater for a fiery performance of recent original works from their 2006 release, Light. These four Juilliard trained musicians entered the music scene in 1998 and have added innovative, edgy string combinations to classical music. Their style, full of gusto and panache, defies categorization; melding together blues, rock, classical, jazz and other popular musical elements to create a unique melody all their own. Ethel’s 2006 release, Light, was recently selected as #3 on Amazon.com’s "Best of 2006: Top Classical Editor’s Picks."
Launching on the Kimmel Center Blog: www.blog.kimmelcenter.org and on iTunes (search for Kimmelcast! and subscribe) on Wednesday, September 26, this first in a series of "Kimmelcast" podcasts features a conversation with Kimmel Center Director of Programming Tom Warner and Ethel violinist Mary Rowell, along with musical samples and a group conversation with upcoming Fresh Ink performers So Percussion and composer Phil Kline. Additional individual Podcasts and iTunes feeds will be available in January 2008 with So Percussion and in March 2008 with Phil Kline.
An Artist Chat with members of Ethel and Kimmel Center’s Director of Programming Tom Warner will follow the ticketed performance on Perelman Stage on Saturday, October 13.

ETHEL is a favorite at countless festivals and venues around the globe, as well as a ubiquitous presence on the New York music scene. In the spring and summer of 2005, Ethel performed over 50 shows across the United States and Europe (including a stop at the Kimmel Center) with pop and rock legends Joe Jackson and Todd Rundgren; a tour that provided much of their material for the 2006 release, Light. In the fall of 2006, Ethel began a fall residency, Ethel LAB!, at the New York’s premiere listening venue, Joe’s Pub, to perform selections from Light as well as explore collaborative performance with several innovative musicians including John King, James Bilagody and Jill Sobule. In 2006, Ethel also returned to Arizona for the group’s second year in residence at the Native American Composer Apprentice Program (NACAP), part of the Grand Canyon Music Festival (GCMF). There, Ethel worked with young composers from the Navajo Nation and the Hopi Tribe; they also launched the first part of their American Truck Stop Tour, a project that takes Ethel into the living rooms of artists in indigenous communities to share cultural perspectives, draw from tradition, and create something new and unexpected.
Members of Ethel have collaborated with some of today's most compelling artists, including Sheryl Crow, Gorillaz, Roger Daltrey, Yo-Yo Ma, Ornette Coleman, and Lenny Kravitz. Committed to reaching audiences of all stripes, the band continues to receive critical acclaim from major publications including The New York Times, The LA Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Billboard Magazine and Strings Magazine.
