A brilliant swirl of color and movement on stage, the internationally renowned 50+ member folkloric dance group Ballet Folklórico De México De Amalia Hernández will perform on the Kimmel Center’s Verizon Hall stage on Sunday, October 14, 2007 at 3pm. Vivid, illuminating dance choreography of Amalia Hernández, founder of the Ballet Folklórico De México takes audiences on a journey through Mexico’s modern and mythic history. The dance troupe uses movement, music, and technical perfection to interpret the complex and rich history of Mexico and its current state. Thirty different cultures will be explored on stage: The Lords of Heaven and Earth, the Jaguars, and Gods born of human flesh all will be reborn and fade away; Pre-Columbian civilizations and Hispanic influences of the Vice royal era up to the Revolutionary years will be reenacted.
This concert is the second in the World & Pop series scheduled for the Kimmel Center Presents 2007/2008 season sponsored by Citi. The next concert in the series is Tango Buenos Aires on Sunday, October 21, 2007 at 3pm.

Amalia Hernández has dedicated her life work to the never-ending quest of rescuing the dance traditions of Mexico. Her career began as a teacher and choreographer of modern dance at the Fine Arts National Institute. In 1952, she decided to leave the institute to form her own dance company, Ballet Folklórico de México, to present her vision of Mexican folkoric dance. Credited as the Cultural Representative of Mexico, Hernández started a series of presentations with the ballet in 1954, which were performed on a weekly television program sponsored by the Mexican government. In 1959, the director of the government’s International Cultural Promotion Organization invited Ms. Hernández to prepare a special program as representatives of Mexico at the Pan-American Games in Chicago. By 1960, the program evolved into the choreography of 30 different ballets, composed by 56 different dances.
Amalia Hernández and the Ballet Folklórico de México have been distinguished with more than 200 awards in recognition of their artistic merits. The dance company has performed more than five thousand presentations, embraced nationally and internationally for the combination of music, technical perfection, sophisticated wardrobe and original choreographies presented on stage. The institution has two main artistic companies called The First Company and the Resident Company: both alternate tours and performances in Mexico and abroad.
