So Percussion Quartet Debuts at the Kimmel Center as Part of the Fresh Ink Series on February 2
January 4, 2008

"The range of colors and voices that So Percussion coaxes from its menagerie is astonishing and entrancing."
"Brilliant"
Metal pipes, wood planks and flower pots create an arresting palette of sound for So Percussion. The Brooklyn-based quartet debuts at the Kimmel Center with a percussive performance of modern music on Saturday, February 2, 2008 at 7:30pm in Perelman Theater as part of the Fresh Ink Series. Master of percussive experimentation, the quartet’s fresh, edgy voice has expanded the ancient art form to include performances of complex works with modern composers Steve Reich, Bang On A Can founder David Lang, and the avant-garde duo Matmos. Their performance will include a mélange of ethereal soundscapes with acoustic instruments accompanied by electronic processing, as heard in their recent album, Amid the Noise (2006), among other selections.
"If you’re sick of the sounds you’ve got, you go and find more," declares Adam Sliwinski of the group’s sonic philosophy. "There’s always something to hit or rub or whatever."
This concert is the second concert in the Fresh Ink Series scheduled for the Kimmel Center Presents 2007/2008 season. The next concert in the series will be a special concert with Christopher O’ Riley on Friday, February 29, 2008 at 7:30pm in Perelman Theater.

The four members of Brooklyn-based So Percussion met in a Yale School of Music graduate program in 1999, and have since emerged as a unique voice in the world of contemporary music. Named for the Japanese verb meaning "to play," So members Jason Treuting, Adam Sliwinski, Josh Quillen, and Eric Beach experiment with sounds including those made by toy pianos, wooden slats, doorbell chimes, vibraphones, bowed marimbas, tuned and prepared pipes, tin cans, a wayward ethernet port, and a variety of sound programming. So Percussion has performed its diverse repertoire at venues across the country, including Miller Theater and Carnegie Hall in New York, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Walker Center in Minneapolis. In addition to performing and recording, the ensemble is involved with numerous educational programs, ranging from teaching adolescents to master classes with student percussionists and composers at Juilliard, Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, the University of Texas, the University of Toronto, The Moscow Conservatory, and many other schools. So’s most recent release, Amid the Noise (2006), follows the quartet’s first two highly acclaimed albums, and further stimulates the senses by synchronizing the soundtrack with haunting urban scenes from Manhattan and Tokyo.
