Kimmel Center Presents 2007/08 Season Sponsored by Citi

Sixth Anniversary Season Marked with 50 Free in the Plaza Performances, 20 Artist Chats, and Seven Organ Postludes

Kimmel Center Presents’ Free at the Kimmel events continue in February during the 6th anniversary 2007/08 season with more than 75 free events and performances to take place throughout the center’s spaces this year. Free at the Kimmel includes: Free in the Plaza with local artists performing classical, jazz, pop, country, world, dance and family fun on the Commonwealth Plaza stage; as well as Artist Chats with Kimmel Center Presents performers; Education Events in the Merck Arts Education Center; and Organ Postludes on The Fred J. Cooper Memorial Organ in Verizon Hall. Updates and complete schedules are available at www.kimmelcenter.org. All artists and programs are subject to change.

FREE AT THE KIMMEL events are made possible through the Wachovia Gateway to the Arts Community Access Program supported by a generous grant from Wachovia Foundation.

Perelman Theater
Artist Chat with Shen Wei Dance Arts
Following the ticketed performance by Shen Wei Dance Arts in Perelman Theater, an Artist Chat will be held on Perelman Stage with choreographer and Artistic Director Shen Wei, members of the Shen Wei Dance Arts ensemble and the Kimmel Center’s Director of Programming Tom Warner.

Eakins Vocal Consort
Philadelphia's newest chamber choir, the Eakins Vocal Consort, comprises eighteen young musical, literary and artistic scholars dedicated to the energetic performance of the best early and modern music for mixed a cappella chorus. Hand-picked by Director Tim Ribchester, the singers combine a high level of choral experience with professional expertise in the arts and humanities.

Michael Barone, host of NPR's Pipe Dreams, explains the intricacies of the majestic Fred J. Cooper Memorial Organ, and interviews that afternoon's featured recitalist Hector Olivera prior to his ticketed performance.

Artist Chat with Sue Mingus
Since Charles Mingus' death in 1979, his widow Sue Mingus has created and continues to direct repertory ensembles to carry on the music of her late husband. The most well known is the Mingus Big Band, who will perform with the T.S. Monk Sextet in Verizon Hall following an Artist Chat with Mrs. Mingus and Vice President of Programming Mervon Mehta.

Melody Gardot
At 22, singer-songwriter Melody Gardot has a hauntingly smooth voice that can melt even the coldest of hearts. With a sublime vapor of mellow blues, eclectic folk, and the faintest essence of jazz, she performs songs from her debut full length album, Worrisome Heart, and other favorites prior to and following the ticketed performance by k.d. lang in Verizon Hall.
