American Jazz Master Dave Brubeck Returns with his Quartet to Perform with the Freddy Cole Quartet as Part of the Mellon Jazz Fridays Series at the Kimmel Center,
April 1, 2008

"Dave Brubeck is an American legend. He is an American original who continues to make significant contributions to music and introduced a whole new generation to the world of jazz."
American jazz master Dave Brubeck and his Quartet share the stage with the Freddy Cole Quartet at the Kimmel Center’s Verizon Hall on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at 8pm as part of the Mellon Jazz Fridays Series. For over five decades, pianist-composer Brubeck has built a jazz empire of hits with his artistic improvisation skills. A BBC Jazz Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Brubeck’s international hit "Take Five," one of the best-selling jazz singles of all time, and signature hit "The Duke" have inspired jazz artists such as Miles Davis with their haunting and challenging harmonies.
Pianist Freddy Cole, jazz giant Nat "King" Cole’s brother, joins the stage with his quartet to perform his own sophisticated style of jazz with bop, samba, cabaret and blues shadings. Revered for his elegant, smoky vocals, Cole’s most recent album, Music Maestro Please, was Grammy® nominated in 2008. Based in Atlanta, his pioneering musical spirit also earned him a spot in the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2007.
"Freddy has an impeccable sense of swing... he is, overall, the most maturely expressive male jazz singer of his generation, if not the best alive."
This concert is the fifth concert in the Mellon Jazz Fridays Series scheduled for the Kimmel Center Presents 2007/2008 season. The next concert in the series will be a special concert featuring the Movie Music of Spike Lee & Terence Blanchard on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at 8pm.

Pianist, composer, and leader of one of the most widely recognized quartets in jazz history, Dave Brubeck founded the Dave Brubeck Quartet in 1951, with alto saxophonist Paul Desmond, bassist Eugene Wright and drummer Joe Morello. The highly experimental band rose in popularity with Time Out (1959), which features the hit single "Take Five." Follow-up albums include Time Further Out (1961), Time in Outer Space (1962), Time Changes (1964) and the classic live album At Carnegie Hall (1963). Brubeck is the first jazz figure ever to make the cover of Time. In recent years, Brubeck reestablished his quartet, touring throughout Europe in 2005 with the London Symphony Orchestra. Brubeck has been named an American Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts and was awarded a National Medal for the Arts by President Bill Clinton. In 2000, the Brubeck Institute was established by the University of the Pacific to honor the distinguished alumnus’ dedication to music and education.
"Gorgeous autumnal baritone, expressive phrasing and pitch-perfect feel for jazz standards, pop tunes and love ballads."
Freddy Cole’s successful music career has been documented by filmmaker Clay Walker in the film The Cole Nobody Knows (2005), which shares Cole’s story through interviews with musicians Monty Alexander, Nancy Wilson and David "Fathead" Newman, among others, and features live performance material with Cole’s quartet. Cole began playing the piano as a child under the influence of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Lionel Hampton and Billy Eckstine. A Chicago native, Cole continued his musical education at the Roosevelt Institute in Chicago, and then moved to New York in 1951, where he studied at the Juilliard School of Music followed by the New England Conservatory of Music. In 1952, Cole released his first single, kicking off a recording career with more than 15 albums to his credit. Following a stint as a member of an Earl Bostic band that also included Johnny Coles and Benny Golson, Cole founded his quartet, touring regularly throughout the United States, Europe, the Far East and South America.
