Sawallisch
Celebration Begins
The Philadelphia Orchestra's tribute
to Music Director Wolfgang Sawallisch's ten years of outstanding
leadership began with a sold-out Opening Gala on September
18, the Orchestra's first Opening Night at its new home in
the Kimmel Center. The Sawallisch celebration marks another
in a series of exciting landmarks for the Orchestra, beginning
with the Centennial Celebration in 1999 and 2000 and the opening
of stunning Verizon Hall in 2001. By the end of this season,
Maestro Sawallisch will have conducted over 650 performances
at home and on tour, and will have hired 39 members of the
Orchestra, including 9 principal players. In the fall of 2003,
he becomes Conductor Laureate, and Christoph Eschenbach becomes
the Orchestra's seventh Music Director, starting a new period
of growth for the historic ensemble.

New Musicians
Onstage for Opening Night
Look for new faces in the violin,
viola and cello sections at your next concert. Zachary De
Pue, Violin; Carrie Dennis, Assistant Principal Viola; and
Efe Baltacigil, Assistant Principal Cello joined the Orchestra
this season. All recent graduates of Philadelphia's renowned
Curtis Institute of Music, as well as veterans of major international
chamber music festivals, they dethrone violinists Miyo Curnow
and Elina Kalendareva as the world-renowned ensemble's newest
members. Although vacant positions are filled via a rigorous
multi-phased audition process, including "blind"
auditions behind a screen, the Curtis-Philadelphia Orchestra
connection has been reinforced over generations of teacher-student
relationships, in which the Orchestra's unique stylistic as
well as technical values are passed on. It is not surprising
that so many Curtis graduates are a natural fit for The Philadelphia
Orchestra.

Philadelphia
Orchestra Award Goes to Mimi O'Malley
For over 40 years, Mimi O'Malley has
been a behind-the-scenes pillar of The Philadelphia Orchestra.
She started in the accounting department in 1960, and for
several decades has served as Executive Assistant to the chairmen,
presidents, executive directors, and to three music directors
of the Orchestra. At Opening Night, she went "public,"
as the recipient of the seventh Philadelphia Orchestra Award,
given by the Board of Directors for exemplary contributions
to the Orchestra. Among previous recipients are Orchestra
musicians, volunteers, donors and sponsors, and Board chairs.

Single Tickets
Now Onsale: Chills and ...Trills?-
You can now purchase tickets for a
variety of special events programs, as well as for individual
subscription concerts. Upcoming events in our beautiful Verizon
Hall include the popular annual Halloween concert; join the
Orchestra members in costume, with this year's guest host
Carlota Tendant, and expect the unexpected! The annual Marian
Anderson Award goes to actor-humanitarian Danny Glover on
November 11, and an array of stars will join the Orchestra
at Verizon Hall to pay tribute to him. It's not too early
to think about the holidays. Winter Wonderland concerts will
include festive music of the season and an audience sing-along
of popular carols, and New Year's Eve will entertain you with
polkas, sparkling Mozart and Haydn waltzes, and of course,
Auld Lang Syne. Finally, the multi-talented Bobby McFerrin
leads the Orchestra and area community choruses for the Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Concert on January 16, sponsored by
Cigna. For tickets to all of the above events, which start

New
Low-Cost Ticket Option for Students
Students with ID cards can now hear
Orchestra concerts for as little as $6 a ticket, by joining
the "Student Understudy" program. They purchase vouchers,
which are redeemed at curtain time for a seat that a ticket
holder has been unable to use and has not already turned in
for resale. The voucher program joins existing half-price subscription
options for students, and the Community Rush program that provides
100 same-day seats for each subscription concert at just $10.
For information, call Ticket Philadelphia at 215-893-1999. |

September
11 Concert Meets Community Need
The Philadelphia Orchestra and eight
other performing arts organizations joined together at Verizon
Hall for a free commemoration and tribute in words and music.
From the haunting poems of children to the challenging dance
movements of PHILADANCO, to the uplifting closing of Beethoven's
9th Symphony, the performers led the audience through a range
of emotional experiences to help cope with this difficult day
and move forward. As they did last year at this time in a special
free Tribute Concert at the Mann Center, Orchestra members returned
early from their summer vacations. All performances and Kimmel
Center support services were donated.
