Verizon Hall
Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts Home of The Philadelphia Orchestra In December 2001, The Philadelphia Orchestra moves to its new home at The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. Designed and built especially for the Orchestra, the Kimmel Center will host the Orchestra's home subscription concertsearch year from September through May. The center includes two performance spaces, the 2500-seat Verizon Hall for orchestral presentations and the 650-seat Perelman Theater for chamber music concerts. Designed by architect Rafael Viñoly along with acoustician Russell Johnson of Artec Consultants Inc., the Kimmel Center will provide the Orchestra with a state-of-the-art facility for concerts, recordings, and education activities. The landmark building is named in honor of Philadelphia businessman and philanthropist Sidney Kimmel, who gave the largest individual gift toward its construction. Kimmel has served on the Board of Directors of The Philadelphia Orchestra since 1995 and on RPAC's Board since 1998. With the opening of the Orchestra's new home, the Kimmel Center and the historic Academy of Music (where the Orchestra has played for the past 101 seasons) will be operated as a single cultural facility by the newly-created Regional Performing Arts Center, Inc.(www.kimmelcenter.org) The Orchestra purchased the Academy in 1957 and will continue to own and be responsible for maintaining the historic landmark - thus sharing with RPAC responsibility as landlord for the Center. A variety of Philadelphia's other performing arts groups will serve as Resident Companies of the two buildings, presenting their artistry each season along with showcase performances by visiting guest artists and ensembles.
