Come pledge allegiance to this diverse musical land with all its regional accents. This season we go on a grand tour of American cities whose different styles serve as ingredients for the musical gumbo we call jazz: Boston, New Orleans, Chicago and Detroit. From each city, our series curator, Danilo Perez, brings in genuine jazz masters and pairs them with dynamic talent from right here in Philadelphia. Join us for an amazing trip around the United States of jazz!

Von Freeman
Chicago
Von Freeman Trio with
special guest Mickey Roker
"The Vonski" is famous for the irresistible tenor sax style he created. Hear "a dynamic improviser with boundless energy and powers of creation. There is surely no other sound in jazz like that of Freeman’s saxophone" (Chicago Sun-Times). He is joined by iconic Philly drummer Mickey Roker, who has performed with a list of jazz stars from Dizzy Gillespie to Ella Fitzgerald.

Ellis Marsalis
New Orleans
Ellis Marsalis with
special guest Orrin Evans
The Big Easy sends us the piano playing grand patriarch of the Marsalis clan. For this duo piano evening, Ellis Marsalis teams up with Philadelphia’s high-powered Orrin Evans, "one of the best young acoustic jazz pianists around" (Philadelphia Daily News). Two pianos—four hands!
"What an honor to have four of my musical heroes join us in the Perelman Theater. Our loyal Philly audience is in for a treat!"—Danilo Pérez, Artistic Advisor, Jazz Up Close

Geri Allen
Detroit
Geri Allen with special guest TBD
This Motor City-born pianist has performed and recorded with artists from across the spectrum of modern jazz including Betty Carter, Ornette Coleman, Tony Williams, Ron Carter and Dewey Redman. Geri Allen’s compositions and improvisational skills bridge the gaps between styles, moving from bop to free with "a spontaneity and melodic gift that greatly transcend rote imitation... both spacious and dense, rubato and swinging, blithe and percussive" (All Music Guide).

Roy Haynes
Boston
Roy Haynes Quartet with
special guest Danilo Pérez
"The father of modern drumming," says Pat Metheny about Boston’s representative. Playing with Chick Corea, Sarah Vaughan, Miles Davis, John Coltrane and fronting his own ensembles, Roy Haynes is a living history of America’s music. Our own Danilo Pérez, who teaches at Boston’s New England Conservatory and Berklee College of Music, sits in on piano.
