FORMER KIMMEL CENTER THEATER RESIDENT
JAMIE LEONHART RETURNS TO PERFORM HER NEWEST PIECE
ESTUARY: AN ARTIST/MOTHER STORY
FEBRUARY 4–6, 2016
Directed by Joanna Settle, UArt’s Director of the
Ira Brind School of Theater Arts
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, January 12, 2016) –– The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts welcomes back singer-songwriter Jamie Leonhart to present her newest work,ESTUARY: an artist/mother story at SEI Innovation Studio Thursday, February 4 through Saturday, February 6 at 8:00 p.m. The show was conceived and written by Jamie Leonhart and is directed by Joanna Settle, Director of the University of the Arts’ Ira Brind School of Theater Arts. ESTUARY's original music is co-written and arranged by Grammy-winner Michael Leonhart. The work was developed in part during her 2014-15 Theater Residency at the SEI Innovation Studio at the Kimmel Center for Performing Arts in collaboration with Joe’s Pub.
ESTUARY: an artist/mother story is a musical exploration of the challenges and unanticipated realities of being an artist and a new parent. The nascence of this piece began soon after the birth of Leonhart’s son with the realization that the lens through which she had previously seen her life as an artist had changed. Throughout her piece, Leonhart uses equal parts humor and heartache to beautifully navigate the changes in her artistic work, her relationship with her husband, and the new, insane world of everything “baby.”
“It is an honor to welcome Jamie’s return to the Kimmel Center, performing this very personal show that took its first steps on the very stage upon which she will perform,” said Anne Ewers, President & CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “It has been a privilege to have watched her grow as an artist throughout her Kimmel Center residency and now, as she embarks on this new phase of her life.”
About Jamie Leonhart
Born in New York City, Jamie began studying the violin at the age of three and singing soon after. Her inspiration to find her voice began in her early teen years while singing in a vocal jazz ensemble. Following her college graduation Jamie continued her musical journey across many platforms. Through leading a pop band, singing as a soloist in the New York Metro Mass, to performing as a solo artist in prominent New York Venues, Jamie continues to develop as an artist. Dynamic in emotional and vocal range and diverse in genre-crossing ability, Jamie’s lithe and lyrical three-and-a-half octave voice and strong melodic sense create atmospheric, whimsical, and soulful arrangements that will draw in the audience. Today, Jamie writes about many things: love, vulnerability, perspective, patience, trust, among others, in an effort to explore the human condition in the most basic form while capturing sentiments that her listeners may be struggling to put into words.
