KIMMEL CENTER JAZZ SERIES CONTINUES WITH
THE JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER ORCHESTRA AND

WYNTON MARSALIS IN A TRIBUTE TO MILES DAVIS
MAY 15, 2016

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, April 27, 2016) –– The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts proudly continues its electrifying jazz series with Tribute to Miles Davis by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis on Sunday, May 15 at 8:00 p.m. at Verizon Hall. This performance will feature new arrangements and as well as timeless favorites from Miles Davis’ legendary body of work. Comprised of 15 of the finest soloists, ensemble players, and arrangers in jazz music, led by Wynton Marsalis, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra aims to entertain, enrich, and expand a global community for Jazz through performance, education, and advocacy.

“I can think of no better group to pay homage to the legendary Miles Davis than the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and their fearless leader, Wynton Marsalis,” said Anne Ewers, President & CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “We are thrilled to welcome the return of this renowned ensemble to Philadelphia, continuing our mission to renew and expand the city’s great tradition of jazz.”

The diverse, label-defying Miles Davis, who would have turned 90 this year, remains the pinnacle of transformative expression, musically and beyond. From Birth of the Cool to Miles in the Sky, the famously versatile Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis promises to offer perspective on many of Davis’ groundbreaking concepts and treasured masterpieces.

Wynton Marsalis is an internationally acclaimed musician, composer, bandleader, educator, and a leading advocate of American culture. He was the world’s first Jazz artist to perform and compose across the full jazz spectrum from its New Orleans roots, to bebop, to modern jazz. Marsalis has since expanded the vocabulary for jazz through creating and performing an expansive range of brilliant new music for ensembles of all sizes and disciplines. He was awarded the Marian Anderson Award in November of 2015.
