JAZZ SINGER-SONGWRITER KAT EDMONSON BRINGS HER PURE AND SOUL-FILLED SOUNDS TO THE PERELMAN THEATER, FEBRUARY 12, 2017

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, December 22, 2016) –– First introduced to the spotlight during the second season of American Idol, jazz chanteuse Kat Edmonson shared her untrained original sound with the world. In celebration of her latest album The Big Picture, and in anticipation of her 2017 album release, the young vocalist and songwriter will perform songs from her own collection as well as favorites from the Great American Songbook at the Perelman Theater on February 12, 2017 at 8:00 p.m.

“Kat Edmonson is a rare talent with a timeless sound and an appreciation for many generations of music,” said Anne Ewers, President & CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “This will be an evening of music from a voice like no other and we’re certain that Philadelphia audiences will be entranced."

An American vintage pop jazz vocalist with a timeless voice, Edmonson’s compositions incorporate traditional and chamber pop, early Rock N’ Roll, blues, folk, and traditional jazz and swing styles. Her singular sound has been described by The New York Times as "honeyed, light-gauge, faintly crinkly singing voice, an instrument of self-containment and reflection." Following her American Idol appearance where she wowed the nation with no formal vocal training, Edmonson found success opening for acts like Jamie Cullum, Michael Kiwanuka, Gary Clark Jr., and more.

Kat Edmonson self-released her debut album, Take to the Sky, in 2009 garnering national attention from radio and press. In 2012, Edmonson crowdfunded her second album, Way Down Low, which soared to Number 1 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart.  In the spring of 2013, Edmonson embarked on her first headlining U.S tour. One year later, Edmonson’s third album The Big Picturewas released, again catapulting Edmonson to Number 1 status on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart.

Other upcoming jazz performances on the Kimmel Center Campus include Joey Alexander Trio (March 18–19, 2017, Perelman Theater), Aaron Diehl Trio (April 1, 2017, SEI Innovation Studio), A Tribute to Abbey Lincoln feature Dee Dee Bridgewater and Dianne Reeves (May 5, 2017, Merriam Theater), and Chris Botti (May 6, 2017, Merriam Theater).
