WALKS DOWN THE AISLE OF THE MERRIAM THEATER FOR THE HOLIDAYS, DECEMBER 27–31, 2016

PHILADELPHIA-AREA NATIVE LIZZIE MARKSON IS AMONG CAST LEADS!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, October 20, 2016) –– Presented collaboratively by the Kimmel Center and The Shubert Organization, the 2016–17 Broadway Philadelphia season continues with Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus’ MAMMA MIA!, the smash hit musical based on the songs of ABBA. The show will return to Philadelphia for a limited holiday engagement December 27–31 at the Merriam Theater as a part of the final farewell tour. Allentown, PA native Lizzie Markson will appear in one of the lead roles, ‘Sophie,’ in the national touring production coming to Philadelphia.

“What a bittersweet engagement, to welcome back such a beloved show as Mamma Mia during its farewell tour,” said Anne Ewers, President & CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “This is a unique opportunity for Philadelphia audiences to hear the classic songs we know and love, performed by one of Pennsylvania’s own!”

MAMMA MIA! is one of the most successful musicals of all time, the eighth longest-running show in Broadway history and one of only five musicals to have run for more than ten years on Broadway. The West End production is now in its eighteenth year. To date, MAMMA MIA! has been seen by over 60 million people worldwide in 50 productions in 16 different languages. Inspired by the storytelling magic of ABBA’s songs from “Dancing Queen” and “S.O.S.” to “Money, Money, Money” and “Take a Chance on Me,” MAMMA MIA! is a celebration of mothers and daughters, old friends and new family found.

MAMMA MIA! is produced by Work Light Productions, whose other touring productions include Cinderella, RENT 20th Anniversary Tour, Motown The Musical (coming to Philadelphia May 30–June 11, 2017 at the Academy of Music), Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, and Vocalosity.

The original production of MAMMA MIA! was produced by Judy Craymer, Richard East, and Björn Ulvaeus for Littlestar in association with Universal. The creative team responsible for bringing MAMMA MIA!to theatrical life includes some of the most gifted and celebrated talents of musical theatre and opera. With music and lyrics by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, MAMMA MIA! is written by Catherine Johnson and directed by Phyllida Lloyd. MAMMA MIA! has choreography by Anthony Van Laast, production design by Mark Thompson, lighting design by Howard Harrison, sound design by Andrew Bruce and Bobby Aitken, and musical supervision, additional material and arrangements by Martin Koch.
