SHOW STOPPERS: MUSICAL CHEERS SHOWCASES

TALENTED LOCAL STUDENTS IN A TRIBUTE TO

ACCLAIMED MUSICALS

MAY 19, 2016

More Than 40 Local High School Students Showcase Skills from

After-School Arts Program in Free Community Performance

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, April 27, 2016) –– The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts’ Education Department will host the third annual Spring Revue performance of the organization’s after-school musical theater program, Show Stoppers. The program, entitled Musical Cheers!, will take place on Thursday, May 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Perelman Theater and celebrates three iconic musicals; The King and I, Wicked, and Les Misérables. This free community concert commends the musical theater, dance, and vocal talents of more than 30 high school students in Philadelphia, Delaware, and Tristate area, who have participated in a semester-long series of weekly, after-school sessions with renowned performing artists.

“It is always an honor to showcase the dedication and great talent of the students in our Show Stoppers program,” said Anne Ewers, President and CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “We take tremendous pride in helping to provide the education and training necessary for the next generation of performers and these performance opportunities reveal great promise for these young artists and what the future holds for each!”

The talented students will perform hit numbers and scenes from three iconic musicals, spanning decades of musical theater. From the Golden age of Broadway with The King and I, to the European International hit Les Misérables and widely popular American trendy pop musical Wicked.  Selections include “Getting To Know You,” “Whistle a Happy Tune,” and “Shall We Dance” from the popular classic, The King and I; “At the End of the Day,” “I Dreamed a Dream,” and “Bring Him Home” from the beautiful phenomenon Les Misérables; and “I’m Not that Girl,” “Popular,” “Defying Gravity,” ‘Dancing Through Life,” and “For Good” from the wildly popular sensation Wicked, among other feature songs.

Helmed under the leadership and direction of Kimmel Center Education Manager Carol Frazier, this production features vocal artistry, amazing acting and captivating choreography taught by teaching artists Reginald Pindell, Jennifer Blaine and Jaquetta Colson.  Now in its third year, Show Stoppers is an After School Musical Theater Program for high school students in the Philadelphia, Delaware Valley and Tri-State area.  The program runs from October through May on Tuesdays and Fridays from 4-6 pm.

The Show Stoppers program is graciously supported by David and Patricia Holveck.
