SMOKEY ROBINSON BRINGS HIS MOTOWN HITS BACK TO THE STAGE AT THE ACADEMY OF MUSIC, NOVEMBER 18, 2016
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, September 21, 2016) –– Often referred to as “the King of Motown,” Smokey Robinson will transport audiences back to the 1960s and 1970s playing hits from both The Miraclesalbums and his solo albums on Friday, November 18, 2016, at 8:00 p.m. at the Academy of Music. The acclaimed singer-songwriter’s illustrious career spans over four decades of hits for The Miracles, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Mary Wells, and many more.
“Smokey Robinson is integral to our country’s musical history and we are thrilled to bring this incredible performance to Philadelphia audiences,” said Anne Ewers, President & CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “He has led a storied career, from his work with the Miracles to his solo albums, and he continues to transport us back in time with his iconic voice.”
Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Robinson founded The Miracles while still in high school. Following multiple singles and #1 hits, Smokey Robinson continued to write songs for The Miracles and many other Motown recording artists. He has received numerous awards including the Grammy Living Legend Award, NARAS Lifetime Achievement Award, Honorary Doctorate (Howard University), Kennedy Center Honors and the National Medal of Arts Award from the President of the United States. He has also been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame.
