PHILADELPHIA CELEBRATES ONE OF MEXICO’S MOST POPULAR HOLIDAYS "THREE KINGS DAY" WITH A FREE EVENT ON COMMONWEALTH PLAZA, JANUARY 6, 2017
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, November 18, 2016) –– The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, in association with the Mexican Consulate and the Mexican Cultural Center, invites the public to Commonwealth Plaza on January 6, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. for a free celebration of Three Kings Day. This spirited celebration, also known as “El Dia de Reyes,” celebrates the height of the Christmas season in Hispanic cultures and will feature an evening of classic Mexican traditions including a reenactment of the story of the Three Wise Men, piñatas, and traditional “Rosca de Reyes” bread – the largest one ever made in Philadelphia! This event is part of the Kimmel Center’s Philly ¡En Vivo! series.
“This free program celebrates a meaningful holiday in the Mexican community and provides an opportunity for all of us to participate in the traditions of other cultures,” said Anne Ewers, President & CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “It’s very important to us to bring people of different backgrounds together on our Kimmel Center Campus to learn about and celebrate the diversity that makes Philadelphia so special.”
Three Kings Day marks the culmination of the twelve days of Christmas and commemorates the Three Wise Men who traveled to present gifts to baby Jesus. In Mexico, people often celebrate the holiday with feasts, celebrations, gift exchanges, and the traditional “Rosca de Reyes” bread.
Other upcoming free performances on the Kimmel Center Campus include Grow Up Great (January 1, 2017, Commonwealth Plaza), Sittin’ In (January 11, 2017, SEI Innovation Studio) and Organ Demonstration (February 18, 2017, Verizon Hall).
