Kurt Rosenwinkel New Quartet
With special guests The Mike Boone Quartet featuring John Swana, Tim Brey, and Anwar Marshall

Kurt Rosenwinkel finished off 2013 on an incredible high - participating in the Kennedy Center Honors awarded to Herbie Hancock and held at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. The tribute was put together by Terence Blanchard and had Kurt perform with Chick Corea, Terri Lyne Carrington, Joshua Redman as well as Snoop Lion (!) and others, and was broadcast by CBS on Dec. 29. You can watch it here. Kurt’s performance begins about 2:20min into the video with his solo on Herbie’s “Watermelon Man”. President Obama & Michelle plus many other dignitaries were in the audience for these performances!

For his first performances in 2014 Kurt will be bringing his New Quartet back to US to the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia on January 16 - Kurt’s first performance in the city he grew up in for quite a while! The Kimmel Center performance will feature Mike Boone & his Quartet as well - Mike is one of Kurt’s best musical friends from Philly, and was a big part in his early growth as a musician, and Kurt invited Mike to be part of this event.

The New Quartet will perform songs from Kurt’s 2012 Wommusic release “Star of Jupiter”, but will also include some new compositions that the public haven’t heard before. It features a cast of characters that are all well-established band leaders in their own right. Pianist Aaron Parks (who also performed the Kennedy Center Honors) recently released a beautiful solo album on ECM entitled “Arborescence” that you can check out here. And bassist Eric Revis has received a lot of critical acclaim for his recent album “City of Asylum”, plus he co-leads another great band called Tarbaby that you should definitely also check out. Drummer Kendrick Scott has been known for a while as a great band leader & composer and has released what has to be one of the best albums in 2013 called “Conviction” with his band known as Kendrick Scott Oracle.
