Here & Now

As part of The United States Artist Fellowship, the Knight Award was given to Xavier as the “Hometown Hero” grant. In partnership with the Kimmel Center, Xavier will present free workshops, panel discussion and dance jam taught by a host of progressive Hip Hop artists in the field. The event will take place in the SEI Innovation Studio on Saturday, June 10th from 10am-11pm. Doors will open at 9:30am. Admission is free but limited to 25 students per class.

Guest teachers include Teena Marie Custer, D. Sabela Grimes & B-boy Neguin in addition to featured panelists Ursula Rucker, Tyiib Smith & Ryan ‘Napalm’ Wagner.

Raphael Xavier was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and a USA Artist Fellowship for choreography in 2016, along with a Pew Fellowship from 2013. Xavier has been a breaking practitioner since 1983. An active alumnus of the world-renowned hip-hop dance company, Rennie Harris PureMovement, Xavier has gone on to forge an exceptional approach to improvisation, creating new ways to expand the vocabulary of the dance form.

This day-long session of classes, panel discussion and movement sharing is about creating dialogue that will inspire artists in dance and the arts, using hip hop forms & education. It’s a giving back to the Philadelphia artist communities for their ongoing support over the years.

Here & Now Hip Hop Forum is free and open to the public and will cover a vast breadth and depth of artistic insight into the Hip Hop culture and performative arts for artists who are thinking about a career in Hip Hop dance and art forms.
