Jazz4Freedom Lesson Plans

Jazz4Freedom is a program developed for 4th-grade students linking Jazz to Black History in Pennsylvania and beyond. Here, we have provided the lesson plans, videos, student activity pages, and Teacher Study Guide for you to use in your virtual classroom!

The “Pre-show Workshop” lesson plan will allow students to learn about the Harlem Renaissance and growth of jazz in Philadelphia. In the “Post-show Workshop” plans, students will be able to explore the links of the Civil Rights Movement to jazz and provide an opportunity for reflection on the continuation of social change. Finally, the study guide contains extra activities connecting Jazz4Freedom to academic standards in Social Studies and Language Arts.
