Overview

In search of new sound worlds, new musical colors

The PRISM Quartet creates music that places the saxophone in unexpected contexts, charting fresh musical territory that challenges, inspires and moves audiences. For their second and final Color Theory program, PRISM collaborates with Grammy®-winning Los Angeles ensemble PARTCH. PARTCH performs on microtonal instruments built by the iconic composer Harry Partch, who referred to himself as "a music man seduced into carpentry." His fantastical, sculptural instruments combine aspects of science fiction, ancient Greece, and Japanese theater. Partch’s "Instrumentariam" includes the Eucal Blossom, Spoils of War, and Cloud-Chamber Bowls. The program features world premieres of Future Lilacs by Ken Ueno and Skiagrafies (Shadow Etchings) by Stratis Minakakis, plus music by Steve Lehman, Iannis Xenakis and Harry Partch himself.

Join us for a pre-concert discussion with John Schaefer (WNYC) and Martha Lucy (Barnes Foundation) at 6:30 pm in Perelman Theater!
