Overview

8pm Doors/DJ | 9pm Live Music

It's a jam session, it's a dance party, it's a live show — and it always features the hottest talent on the scene!! Sittin' In is the free, monthly jam session at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. Blending edgy horns, choice vinyl, cutting edge MC's and soaring vocalists, each session is unique, led by a stellar lineup of guest hosts and their band of choice.

Jam sessions have had a long history within American music culture, often serving as the primary testing ground for new artists, and even entire genres. Throughout their over 100 years of existence hosting artists ranging from Dizzy Gillespie, to John Coltrane, to Sarah Vaughan, to The Roots, to Jill Scott and Erika Badu, and countless others, Philly jam sessions have been first in bringing so many world renown artists to recognition.

 This month:

February 2017 marks the 5th Anniversary of Sittin’ In! Serendipitously, Anthony Tidd, the curator of Sittin’ In, will also celebrate his birthday on the exact same day as this Sittin’ In anniversary!

This calls for twice the celebration, featuring some of Sittin’ In’s favorite regulars, including Orrin Evans, Ursula Rucker, Josh Lawrence, Laurin Talese, Korey Riker, Chartel Findlater, Tim Motzer, Luke Carlos O’Reilly, Anwar Marshall, and of course Anthony Tidd, Ciarra and DJ Blaak The 9th Man. Who knows who else will show up!

This 5th anniversary of Sittin’ In will bring all of these great performers together for what can only be described as a huge jam session/party extravaganza, reminiscent of Wilhelmina’s, Back 2 Basics, Black Lilly, etc.

As part of the show, and in observance of Black History Month, our hosts will also explore some of Philadelphia’s rich jam session history.
