Overview

Schubert: Piano Sonata in A Major, D. 959

Intermission

Schubert: Schwanengesang, D. 957

“One of the most pure and lyrical tenors in the business” (New York Times), Mark Padmore returns to the PCMS stage with Jonathan Biss—“an artistic voice like no other” (Philadelphia Inquirer)—for our third curated program on the theme of “late style.” Both artists’ profound understanding of Schubert will be immediately evident as they illuminate the composer’s remarkable final works. The visionary quality in the music of Schubert’s last year is unmistakable: there is a mix of feverish terror (in such songs as Der Doppelgänger) and consolation unlike anything else in music before or after.
