Stravinsky                   Suite from The Firebird

Join the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra (PYO) for an afternoon of Russian masterpieces. Lead by Maestro Louis Scaglione in his 20th anniversary season, PYO will perform Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 1, written as a requirement for his graduation from the Petrograd Conservatory at the age of 19. The orchestra then performs selections from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet. Derived from his ballet, the music depicts the star-crossed lovers’ passion for each other, pure outrage of the opposing families, and the tragic death of the young lovers. The program concludes with the dazzling Suite from The Firebird by Stravinsky, which is based on a Russian folk legend involving an immortal Ogre, enchanted princesses, and the magical Firebird!
