This year's camp featured over 40 world class musicians who provided over 100 hours of quality instruction to over 80 of the areas most talented, young jazz students over a ten day period.
Our camp focused on many essential disciplines key to the development of students within the field of jazz and creative music.
We presented 9 master classes led by some of today's most celebrated jazz innovators, including: Vijay Iyer, Steve Coleman & The Five Elements, Tyshawn Sorey, Jonathan Finlayson, Dan Weiss, Sumi Tonooka, J.D. Allen, Rajna Swaminathan, and Venissa Santi.
We featured daily jam celebrity-led sessions, instrumental and vocal workshops, and a comprehensive series of theory and composition-based ensemble classes.
We also had the immense pleasure of welcoming five amazing Artists in Residence:
World-renown master drummer Greg Hutchinson
Pianist/composer, and two-time Grammy nominee Orrin Evans
Vocalist/composer, and 2017 Kimmel Jazz Residency Artist, Joanna Pascale
Vocalist/composer, and 2008 PEW Fellow, Venissa Santi
Saxophonist/composer, and awardee of the 2017 Jazz Gallery Commission Residency, Maria Grand
Together during camp, this amazing team prepared a selection of new compositions and arrangements, specifically written for our students.
This year's summer concert will feature some of the tristate areas brightest jazz students, under the instruction of world-class jazz artists such as Greg Hutchinson, Orrin Evans, Maria Kim Grand, who will perform a selection of new and original music composed during their two-week camp experience here at the Kimmel Center.
