These are the first Philadelphia Orchestra performances of Peter Maxwell Davies's sprightly composition, inspired by the high-spirited Orkney Islands wedding of friends and featuring, yes, a bagpipe solo. First Associate Concertmaster Juliette Kang is the violin soloist for Bruch's fantasia of traditional folk songs from the Highlands and beyond. Mendelssohn took a walking tour of Scotland as a young man and returned home with the first strains of his “Scottish” Symphony—one of his most cherished works.
