Our spring graduation recitals conclude with a trio of stirring works performed by cellist Albert Seo. His recital begins with J. S. Bach’s intimate and deeply emotional Suite No. 5 in C minor. Legendary cellist and former Curtis faculty member Mstislav Rostropovich is said to have found “the essence of Bach’s genius” in the suite’s Sarabande. Paul Hindemith’s fascinating Sonata, full of shifting moods, reveals its creator’s eager desire to bend, break, and create musical rules. The performance concludes with Ana Sokolovic’s Vez. Serbian for “embroidery,” Vez is a colorful work inspired by music of the Balkans.
