The 2016 Kimmel Center Theater Residency program serves as an incubator for creating innovative new works while challenging artists, both professionally and personally. The two-week residency culminates with public free readings with audience feedback and Q&A opportunities. Half of the artistic teams will present on the 24th, with the others presenting the 25th.

Friday June 24 7:30pm
Set 1 = Theo Bleckmann & Jacob Cooper
Set 2 = Johnny Showcase with Michael Baker & Ross Bellnoit
Set 3 = Dawn Landes & Danny Goldstein

Saturday June 25 7:30pm
Set 1 = Carol Lipnik & Tareke Ortiz
Set 2 = Courtnee Roze & Jeffandy AllTogether

The Kimmel Center and Joe’s Pub, one of New York City’s premiere live showcase venues and launching pad for many artists’ careers, collaborated on the artist selection process. The partnership provides guidance and dramaturgy to the five selected artistic teams in the creation of their work, with additional opportunity for further development on the Joe’s Pub stage at the Public Theater.

Works born from this program by artists including Deb Margolin, Daniel Alexander Jones, and Ethan Lipton have resulted in acclaimed Off-Broadway and regional runs in theaters like Soho Rep, Cherry Lane Theatre, The Public Theater, and as part of The Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts.

This Years Participants Include:

Theo Bleckmann & Jacob Cooper

A jazz singer and new music composer of eclectic tastes and prodigious gifts, GRAMMY®NOMINATED Theo Bleckmann makes music that is accessibly sophisticated, unsentimentally emotional, and seriously playful.

Philadelphia’s own Jacob Cooper is the creator of compositions and multimedia works that have garnered recognition throughout North America and Europe.

Dawn Landes & Danny Goldstein

Kentucky born Dawn Landes first traveled to Paris to perform in the Les Femmes s’en Mêlent festival as a 22 year old songwriter. Her hand-made cds caught the attention of indie label Ocean Music who released her first album “Dawns Music” in France in 2005.

Daniel Goldstein was most recently represented on Broadway by the revival of Godspell. He has directed over 100 plays and musicals worldwide, including work at major theaters across America and Asia.

Carol Lipnik & Tareke Ortiz

Carol Lipnik's music does more than evoke a shadow-world of mysterious, often misunderstood creatures, from sideshow freaks and b-movie monsters to love's obsessive victims. It creates that world, bringing it into audible being through her stunningly versatile four-octave voice and expressive, impeccably crafted songs. .

Ortiz is a film and theater composer, pianist, singer, actor, cabaret performer and, currently Artistic Director of the international arts summit Cumbre Tajin, México.

Courtnee Roze & Jeffandy AllTogether

Courtnee Roze is a composer, producer, lead vocalist and percussionist. She is also the founder of the band Courtnee Roze The Musical, an audiovisual project that documents the journey and life of Courtnee Roze.

Jeffandy AllTogether is a young bandleader, un-orthodox poet and fearless music producer who willfully pushes the boundaries of genre. These traits have landed him placements with The Barkays, underground gospel legend Doobie Powell as well as other local and international artists.

Johnny Showcase with Michael Baker & Ross Bellnoit

Johnny Showcase is an electrifying experience. An 8-piece absurdist soul outfit based in Philadelphia, it is an innovative, joyful tour-de-force that blissfully toes the line between performance art and a psychedelic soul revival.

The Kimmel Center’s Theater Residency has been made possible by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, The Lida Foundation, Linda & David Glickstein, and Karen Lotman. We thank them for their generous contributions and continued support.
