RAVEL L’enfant et les sortilèges
BOULEZ Notations (Conner)
MUSSORGSKY Pictures at an Exhibition
Corrado Rovaris, music director of Opera Philadelphia, presides over a program that is part-symphonic, part-operatic. Members of the Curtis Opera Theatre portray the temperamental child and animated objects of Ravel’s colorful and quirky one-act opera, L’enfant et les sortilèges. And a restrained Modernist masterwork, Notations pour orchestre by Pierre Boulez, gives way to the moody, majestic Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky—a quintessential depiction of painting in musical form.
