Trumpeter Charles Tolliver Named
2019 Living Legacy Jazz Award Presented by PECO Honoree
Award to be Presented October 11, 2019 at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia
Baltimore - June 25, 2019 - Trumpeter, composer, arranger, and bandleader Charles Tolliver will be honored with the 2019 Living Legacy Jazz Award Presented by PECO in a special ceremony at the Kimmel Center on Friday, October 11, 2019. The Award is a program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation (MAAF) and honors living jazz masters from the mid-Atlantic region who have achieved distinction in jazz performance and education. The 2019 event marks the 25th Anniversary of the Living Legacy Jazz Award and the 40th Anniversary of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation.
Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation is pleased to welcome PECO as the new title sponsor of the Living Legacy Jazz Award. PECO is Pennsylvania's largest electric and natural gas utility and is one of the Greater Philadelphia region's most active corporate citizens. The company provides about $6 million in grant support annually to numerous educational, environmental, arts and culture and community development organizations. "PECO is known for investing in the arts and the Living Legacy Jazz Award allows us to bring greater visibility to the importance of jazz to the City of Philadelphia," said Romona Riscoe Benson, Director of Corporate Relations at PECO. "We are excited about partnering with MAAF and the Kimmel Center on this event, as another way for PECO to intersect with the Philadelphia jazz community as a whole."
Additionally, MAAF is delighted to be working in partnership with the Kimmel Center as our new presenting partner for the Living Legacy Jazz Award Presented by PECO. Located in the heart of Center City, Philadelphia, the Kimmel Center's mission is to engage the region's diverse communities with art through performance and education. “Serving as the new host for the Living Legacy Jazz Award is an immense honor for the Kimmel Center and for Philadelphia,” said Anne Ewers, President & CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “This award emphasizes artists’ commitment and contributions to education, work that embodies our own Campus vision to transform lives daily through the arts. With free & diverse student jazz programming from preschool to high school, to a multi-year community Jazz Residency program, as well as an array of world-renowned jazz artists presented across nine performance venues each year, the Kimmel Center and the City of Philadelphia are a home for the development and sustenance of jazz as an artform.”
The 2019 Living Legacy Jazz Award Presented by PECO will include a reception in the Kimmel Center's Hamilton Garden including music from a local youth jazz group and the Award ceremony. At 8pm, guests will be treated to a concert by Marcus Roberts and the Modern Jazz Generation Band with a special appearance by the 2018 Living Legacy honoree, Toshiko Akiyoshi in the Perelman Theater.

Charles Tolliver began his professional career and simultaneously his recording debut with the saxophone giant Jackie McLean on Blue Note Records in 1964. With a career that has spanned five decades he has recorded and/or performed with renowned artists Roy Haynes, Hank Mobley, Willie Bobo, Horace Silver, McCoy Tyner, Sonny Rollins, Booker Ervin, Gary Bartz, the Gerald Wilson Orchestra, Oliver Nelson, Stanley Cowell, Herbie Hancock, Andrew Hill, Louis Hayes, Roy Ayers, Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers, and owned the trumpet chair with the great Max Roach for many years. He has a Grammy nomination or his Blue Note recording With Love. His latest recording, Emperor March, was recorded live at the Blue Note club New York City.
Previous Living Legacy Jazz Award winners include Toshiko Akiyoshi, Odean Pope, Ron Carter, Gary Bartz, Joanne Brackeen, Nathan Davis, Muhal Richard Abrams, Phil Woods, Roy Haynes, Dr. Frank Foster, Kenny Barron, Benny Golson, Oliver Lake, Rufus Reid, Randy Weston, Keter Betts, Jimmy Heath, Joe Kennedy, Jr., Shirley Scott, Reggie Workman, Dr. Donald Byrd, Larry Ridley, Barry Harris, Robert "Boysie" Lowery, and Clark Terry. A Millennium Award was conferred on Dr. Billy Taylor in 2000.
