FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - (Philadelphia, PA, February 11, 2020) – The Kimmel Center Cultural Campus welcomes three-time Grammy® Award-winning multi-instrumentalist Bruce Hornsby to the Merriam Theater on March 4, 2020 at 8:00 p.m. Hornsby has impressively built one of the most diverse, collaborative, and adventurous careers in contemporary music.

Accompanying Hornsby is the six-person classical polymath ensemble, yMusic, known for playfully overstepping the boundaries of musical genres. Together, this performance will showcase each’s ability to continue to push forward into exciting new musical terrain.

“Presenting a wide range of genres, from rock and jazz to Broadway and comedy, is one of our top priorities on the Kimmel Center Cultural Campus,” said Anne Ewers, President & CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “This unique concert experience weaves Hornsby’s rock and bluegrass background with classical and contemporary, and we know this will be appealing to diverse musical backgrounds and tastes.”

Bruce’s career first took off when he released his widely popular hit “The Way It Is” with his band the Range in 1986. After the success of Bruce’s single, he released his album of the same name, which later went on to become platinum certified. During the following year, Bruce went on to win a Grammy® Award for Best New Artist, beating out Glass Tiger, Timbuk3, and Nu Shooz. In 1988, Hornsby appeared on stage with The Grateful Dead, a collaboration that would continue until The Grateful Dead’s last performance years later. Bruce has also made appearances on albums with Bob Dylan, Robbie Robertson; Clannad; Crosby, Stills, and Nash; and Stevie Nicks.

Hornsby released his first solo album, Harbor Lights, in 1993. The jazz-oriented record featured an all-star lineup, including Pat Metheny, Branford Marsalis, Jerry Garcia, Phil Collins, and Bonnie Raitt. This project led Hornsby to secure his third Grammy® Award for Best Pop Instrumental for “Barcelona Mona”, which was composed with Branford Marsalis for the Barcelona Olympics. For the release of his newest album Absolute Zero, Bruce found himself returning to traditional American roots forms, while collaborating with Ricky Skaggs in the process.

yMusic, a sextet ensemble band, has recently been taking the classical scene by storm by playing original classical music while incorporating a modern, contemporary sound. Founded in New York City in 2008, yMusic believes in presenting excellent, emotionally communicative music, regardless of style or idiom. Their creative and artistic talent (string trio, flute, clarinet, and trumpet) has attracted the attention of high-profile collaborators – from Paul Simon to Ben Folds – and have inspired original works by some of today’s foremost composers, including Nico Muhly, Missy Mazzoli, and Andrew Norman. They have received critical acclaim from well-known publications such as NPR, The New Yorker, and Pitchfork.

Other featured upcoming performances at the Kimmel Center Cultural Campus include: Lewis Black: It Gets Better Every Day (March 6, 2020, Merriam Theater), Paula Poundstone (March 7, 2020, Merriam Theater), MasterChef Junior Live!(March 11, 2020, Merriam Theater), Ethan Lipton & his orchestra (March 14, 2020, SEI Innovation Studio), and Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles (March 13-15, 2020, Merriam Theater).
