THE KIMMEL CENTER CULTURAL CAMPUS

WELCOMES HILARIOUS AUSTRALIAN COMEDIAN

HANNAH GADSBY FOR HER ALL-NEW TRAILBLAZING

“As uproariously funny as it is profoundly furious.” – The New Yorker

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, May 7, 2019) – The Kimmel Center Cultural Campus is delighted to welcome award-winning comedian Hannah Gadsby for her new stand-up show, Douglas, at the Merriam Theater on Sunday, June 23, 2019 at 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., presented in association with WestBeth Entertainment. The stand-up stage has been Gadsby’s home for more than a decade, and the last couple of years have given her a few very new ideas to think and talk about in her first ever US tour.

“Hannah Gadsby delivers a bold brand of comedy, the perfect closer for our varied 2018-19 comedy series,” said Anne Ewers, President and CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “We admire her ability to utilize humor to address important issues in an accessible way. It is an honor to host her on the Kimmel Center Cultural Campus for the first time.”

The overnight success of Hannah Gadsby was more than ten years in the making, with her award-winning stand-up shows a sell-out fixture in festivals across Australia and the UK since 2009. She played a character called “Hannah” on the TV series Please Like Me and has hosted three art documentaries, inspired by comedy art lectures she created to accompany collections at major galleries. Gadsby has a book in the works with Ballantine in North America and Allen and Unwin in Australia and the UK. Translation rights have been sold in multiple territories.

Hannah came to the world’s attention through her multi-award-winning stand-up show Nanette. The show took out the top prizes at the Melbourne and Edinburgh festivals and played to sold out houses across Australia, London, Edinburgh, New York, and Los Angeles, before launching on Netflix in June 2018 as the first Australian Netflix Original Comedy Special, stopping the comedy world in its tracks by starting a global conversation that continues months later.

While Nanette was a random barista, Douglas is a very specific dog, and the only thing they have in common is they’ve inspired Gadsby to put pen to paper and turn out a show you couldn’t possibly expect. Gadsby found her voice with Nanette and with Douglas she plans to use it.
