CELEBRATE JAZZ APPRECIATION MONTH APRIL 2018 ON THE KIMMEL CENTER CULTURAL CAMPUS WITH JAZZ LEGENDS WYNTON MARSALIS & CHICK COREA
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, February 20, 2018) –– The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts will celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month this April with a fusion of new and legendary artists.
Cutting-edge pianist Luke Carlos O’Reilly is a Kimmel Center 2017-18 Jazz Resident with a social justice message about the Black Lives Matter movement in his music. Former Jazz Residency Artists Jawanza Kobie and Deb Margolin will return to perform their show Bird Stories for young audiences at Grow Up Great. Plus, Grammy® Award-winning jazz musician, trumpeter, composer, teacher, and music educator Wynton Marsalis will join forces with Grammy® Award-winning jazz pianist and composer Chick Corea for Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. These are just a taste of the fantastic performances the month of April will have to offer!

As part of the Kimmel Center Jazz Residency, Luke Carlos O’Reilly, a composer specializing in piano, is focusing his project on the Black Lives Matter movement and is collaborating with choreographer Sanchel Brown and lyricist Pannan Hewitt. Beginning with his personal encounters with law enforcement, O’Reilly plans to channel fear, passion, sadness, and anger to inspire his new music.
Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis & Chick Corea

On a few unforgettable occasions, Chick Corea has joined the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis — a group he calls "the greatest big band on the planet" — to perform transformative new iterations of his music. Now they're joining forces to explore the work of another master pianist and composer: Thelonious Monk, the high priest of modern music.
Corea has provided the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with a list of his favorite Monk compositions, and the band's brilliant arrangers have crafted inspired new versions of these classics. With complex yet always-swinging rhythms, poetic and beautiful harmonic progressions, and iconoclastic, tuneful melodies, Monk's compositions lend themselves to endless adaptation.

The Kimmel Center is happy to welcome back 2016-17 Jazz Resident Artist Jawanza Kobie to perform his show Bird Stories at Grow Up Great. Can a skunk and a woodpecker be friends? Composer Jawanza Kobie and his band perform original music and are joined by narrator/playwright Deb Margolin to create a cast of animal characters that learn acceptance and tolerance. An excellent introduction to the genre of jazz, Bird Stories celebrates music while teaching how we can all get along despite our differences.

Sittin’ In’s Jazz Appreciation Month presentation of Who Got The Jazz will bring the diverse young Philadelphia artists community together with the older Philadelphia jazz community, illustrating the relationship and collective culture between the two.
Who Got The Jazz is a successful jazz/soul/hip hop fusion series that celebrates master Jazz musicians or soul vocalists work in a live curated jam session style.

MONO/POLY is a musical collaboration derived from MONOphonic and POLYphonic harmonic signatures where a singular bandleader and saxophonist, Max Swan, meets the rotating many – DJ Royale, Mic Stewart, and Alita Moses.
RDNZVS is a pop-up gathering based in Philadelphia that fuses music, art, and nature, led by DJ Royale.
Together, Max and DJ Royale will combine efforts for one night that bring the outdoors and nature of RNDZVS together with the concepts of MONO/POLY inside the SEI Innovation Studio at the Kimmel Center.

Education facilities at Kimmel Center
Talented teaching artists will engage students and expose them to Jazz Scat Singing. Students will learn what it is, where it comes from, and how it works. Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and Take Six are just a few of the legendary artists students will learn about. Plus, they’ll try creating cool jazz scat riffs while being guided on an amazing, interactive musical journey. For more information, contact maec@kimmelcenter.org or call 215-790-5896.

Most events held in SEI Innovation Studio are designated BYO performances.
Acceptable forms of BYO are 6-pack of beer and/or 750ml bottles of wine only; no liquor or open containers are permitted. Limit of one (1) 750ml bottle of wine OR one (1) six-pack of beer per two guests. Corkscrews and rolling coolers are not permitted. Ice, cups and corking service available at venue at no cost. All BYO Night guests are subject to lawful ID checks and bag checks at the manager’s discretion.
