FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, February 22, 2018) –– Two-time Grammy® Award-winning, singer and celebrated songwriter John Prine comes to the Merriam Theater with special guest Kurt Vile on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at 8:00 p.m. Prine will be touring to play music from his landmark new album due out this spring. It will be the first album of his original music in almost 13 years.

“John Prine’s brilliant lyrics resonate with audiences across all generations, remaining relevant and timeless as years go by,” said Anne Ewers, President and CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “An original writer and artist in every sense, I am elated to see him perform new music for the first time in almost 13 years.”

John Prine is among the English language’s premier phrase-turners. A legendary rocker for more than 45 years, Prine’s remarkable career has drawn lavish praise from music’s greats, including Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Roger Waters, Bruce Springsteen, and others. He is a Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame member whose debut self-titled album is recognized as part of the Recording Academy’s Grammy Hall of Fame.  Although he has an impressive resume, with songs recorded by Johnny Cash, Bette Midler, Norah Jones, Miranda Lambert, Tom T. Hall, and many others, his genius isn’t found in his resume, it is found in the brilliance of lyrics.

His notable 45-year career has earned him many accolades, including an Americana Music Honors and Awards win for lifetime achievement in songwriting, and most recently, being named 2017 Artist of the Year. 2017 was a noteworthy year in many senses, also marking the release of Prine’s debut book, John Prine Beyond Words. The songbook includes a selection of favorite songs, photographs and stories from Prine’s beloved catalogue. Today, he continues to record and perform at sold out shows all over the US, Canada, and Europe.

Kurt Vile is a Philadelphia-based, multi-instrumentalist singer, songwriter, and record producer. He is both known for his solo work and as the former lead guitarist of indie-rock band, the War on Drugs. He has released seven solo albums since his split with War on Drugs, all adoringly received by fans and critics.
