FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, September 9, 2019) – The hilarious Peabody Award-winning hit TV comedy is coming to Philadelphia with the all-new Mystery Science Theater 3000 Live: The Great Cheesy Movie Circus Tour! On October 25, 2019 at 7:00 p.m., show creator and original host, Joel Hodgson, and the world’s greatest – and only – movie riffing robots (Tom Servo, Crow and Gypsy) take audiences on an exhilarating rollercoaster ride through some of the cheesiest films ever made at the Kimmel Center’s Merriam Theater.

The live production is exhilarating, nonstop, rapid-fire hilarity, brimming with hundreds of jokes riffing on a “So-Bad-It’s-Good” feature film, plus spirited sketches and songs that turn the stage into a circus-themed party. This will be the last chance to see Hodgson as he celebrates his final live tour performing the unique comedic art form he created.

“Mystery Science Theater 3000 has amassed an avid cult following over decades,” said Ed Cambron, Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “Joel Hodgson created a wholly unique comedic experience, and we are honored to host him for this farewell tour, adding his creativity and humor to an already full comedy lineup for October, including Bianca Del Rio, Cristela Alonzo, Marc Maron, and Dena Blizzard.”

Mystery Science Theater 3000 has earned its place in history as one of Time Magazine’s Top 100 TV Shows of all time and has been revived as a hit show on Netflix. The show won a Peabody Award in 1993, was nominated for two Emmy® Awards in 1994 and 1995, and for the CableACE Award from 1992 to 1997.

The show features main character Joel Robinson (Joel Hodgson), who is shot into space and imprisoned aboard the spacecraft Satellite of Love and forced to watch bad movies while mad scientist, Dr. Clayton Forrester, and his crony, TV’s Frank, monitor his mind. Joel builds a cast of lovable robot sidekicks to help keep his sanity: Crow, Tom Servo, Gypsy, and Cambot. It’s only through their wise cracks, quips, and friendships that they make it through a barrage of increasingly terrible cinema.

In 2015, fans of the show united behind a record-breaking Kickstarter to revive the show for a brand new 14-episode season that premiered on Netflix in 2017. While the next generation cast is led by host Jonah Ray, for this performance, Joel Hodgson is back in the red jumpsuit as Joel Robinson.

Other featured upcoming performances at the Kimmel Center Cultural Campus include: Randy Rainbow Live! (September 21, 2019, Merriam Theater), A Night with Janis Joplin (September 24, 2019, Merriam Theater), The Office! A Musical Parody!(September28-29, Merriam Theater), and Marc Maron (October 10, 2019, Merriam Theater).
