KIMMEL CENTER CULTURAL CAMPUS HOSTS

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC LIVE SPEAKER SERIES WITH

RENOWNED PHOTOJOURNALIST CRISTINA MITTERMEIER

MAY 16, 2019

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, April 4, 2019) – The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts is thrilled to welcome legendary marine biologist and photographer Cristina Mittermeier and Standing at the Water’s Edge, part of the Kimmel Center’s National Geographic Live speaker series. The presentation will be held at the Kimmel Center’s Merriam Theater on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at 8:00 p.m.

“This unique National Geographic Live series blends Cristina Mittermeier’s awe-inspiring photographs with personal commentary to provide a powerful evening that emphasizes living harmoniously with nature across cultures,” said Anne Ewers, President and CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “The photographs speak for themselves, capturing a passion and strength within the world that most of us seldom see within our own environments.”

Mittermeier’s advocacy for conservation issues resonates throughout her work. As a writer and a photographer for the past 25 years, her work centers on the delicate balance between human well-being and healthy ecosystems. Even when the subjects she captures are a world away, she manages to imbue her photographs with an incredible relevance and urgency.

The impact of her work is undeniable. She has been featured in hundreds of publications including National Geographic Magazine, McLean’s, and TIME. Additionally, she was named Smithsonian Conservation Photographer of the Year and has been recognized as one of World’s top 40 Most Influential Outdoor Photographers by Outdoor Magazine and was named one of National Geographic’s 2018 Adventurers of the Year.

Mittermeier is president and co-founder of SeaLegacy, a non-profit organization dedicated to furthering the cause of ocean conservation through visual storytelling and photography. She sits on the board of WILD Foundation and is part of Conservation International’s Chairman’s Council.

Other featured upcoming performances at the Kimmel Center Cultural Campus include: PHILADANCO: Dance Philly Style (April 12-14, 2019, Perelman Theater), From Hell to Paradise (April 20, 2019, Verizon Hall), Professor Brian Cox: “Universal: Adventures in Space & Time” (April 28, 2019, Verizon Hall), Rob Lowe: Stories I Only Tell My Friends: Live (May 17, 2019, Merriam Theater), and Manual Cinema ADA/AVA (May 18, 2019, Verizon Hall).
