THE KIMMEL CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS AND THE UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS TO LAUNCH “PHILLY’S CREATIVE JAZZ INSTITUTE”

New intensive summer program for top middle and high school musicians to feature master artists-in-residence, live performances

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, January 18, 2018) – This summer, the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts and the University of the Arts will launch an exciting new jazz music program, “Philly’s Creative Jazz Institute,” for some of the top middle and high school jazz musicians in the region, across the country, and around the world. The dynamic, two-week intensive, from July 9 through 21, 2018, is the latest project in an ongoing partnership between the Kimmel Center and UArts, neighbors on the Avenue of the Arts and leaders in Philadelphia’s arts scene.

Philadelphia has deep roots in jazz performance and education, and the Creative Jazz Institute will take advantage of the Kimmel Center's world-class facilities and the UArts talented faculty as the backdrop for some of the brightest young jazz talents to gain invaluable experience in a creative, live-performance setting. In addition, high school students who complete the requirements will receive three college credits.  Full and partial scholarships will be available to talented and promising young musicians based on need and/or merit.

“We are thrilled to cultivate our partnership with University of the Arts through the brand new ‘Creative Jazz Institute’, a summer program for talented students with burgeoning jazz interest,” said Anne Ewers, President and CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “Arts education and commitment to community are part of our core Kimmel Center mission; this program enables us to reach and support the next generation of jazz musicians in Philadelphia, truly transforming lives daily through the arts.”

The new program will allow instrumentalists and vocalists to interact with top-level artists-in residence, while exploring technique and repertoire. Students will work with UArts faculty and top jazz performers to uncover a range of possibilities through jam sessions and ensembles, with an emphasis on improvisation and performance.

"This program can serve as a national model for youth jazz education," said Erin Elman, Dean of the UArts Division of Continuing Studies. "We are thrilled to be bringing together two renowned institutions, incredible master performers, and talented educators to create the premier jazz program for youth in the country. This Institute will serve as a pipeline for talented and passionate musicians from middle school up to college, from Philadelphia and around the world, to pursue jazz performance at a high level."

The program’s curriculum is designed for motivated 6th - 12th grade students and features work with celebrity artists-in-residence, daily master classes, trips throughout Philadelphia to experience live music, and collaboration with students in UArts’ concurrent dance and music business programs for pre-college students.

The program culminates in a free concert performance for family, friends, and peers in the Kimmel Center's Perelman Theater on Saturday, July 21, 2018.

Audition details are below:
