FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, January 17, 2018) – Jazz violinist Regina Carter returns to Philadelphia, bringing her boundless curiosity and hard swinging style to the Perelman Theater on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at 8:00 p.m. Carter will be performing her acclaimed new record, Ella: Accentuate the Positive, in honor of 2017 marking the 100th birthday of musical legend and Carter’s biggest inspiration, Ella Fitzgerald. Carter will pay tribute to Fitzgerald through a masterful interpretation of Fitzgerald’s classic tunes.

It is diversely talented artists such as Carter and Ella Fitzgerald that have set jazz apart from other musical styles in history.”
The release of Ella: Accentuate the Positive marks Carter’s 10th album, continuing her string of remarkable studio offerings that balance creative playfulness with jaw-dropping technical skills while accentuating her unique boundary-defying musical vision.
Carter began her musical career in the classical world at age four when she picked up the violin and began performing in the youth division of the Detroit Symphony. Following her schooling at Cass Technical High School and the New England Conservatory, she switched her attention to jazz and transferred to Michigan’s Oakland University. In 1987, Carter joined an all-female pop/jazz group, Straight Ahead, and released her first two records on the Atlantic label before going solo in 1991 and moving to New York City.
The first five years after moving to New York City, Carter did session work with major artists including Aretha Franklin, Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige, Billy Joel, and Dolly Parton. In 1995, she released her self-titled solo album, followed by Something for Grace in 1997. That same year, she toured with Wynton Marsalis for his Pulitzer Prize-winning production, Blood on the Fields. Following the tour, Carter’s career blossomed after a move to Verve Records, under which she released several acclaimed records. The following year, Carter traveled to Italy and made history by being the first jazz musician as well as African American to play the legendary Guarneri Del Gesu violin. Carter has continued her dynamic career to this day, exploring various genres and music styles with the release of distinguished albums and tours.
