FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, December 17, 2018) – After a groundbreaking premiere performance last season, the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts welcomes back Cantor David F. Tilman as he leads a back-by-popular-demand evening of Jewish music in Sing Hallelujah! in Verizon Hall on Wednesday, February 20, 2019 at 8:00 p.m. This year, upwards of 125 choristers will perform music that celebrates the arrival of the Jewish people in America and how their music was changed by the harmonies, rhythms, colors, and emotions of a new home. Cantor Alberto Mizrahi will join Sing Hallelujah! as special guest from Congregation Anshe Emet in Chicago.
“We are thrilled to have harmonious music fill Verizon Hall as we welcome the talented choirs of local synagogues in this anticipated return of Sing Hallelujah,” said Anne Ewers, President and CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “This year’s performance will showcase both returning and new members of the community, as they share their beautiful voices in an evening dedicated to Jewish music and religious tolerance and respect.”
Sing Hallelujah will be led by music director and conductor Cantor David F. Tilman. Cantor Tilman, a graduate of Columbia College, Miller Cantorial School of the Jewish Theological Seminary, and the Juilliard School, is Cantor Emeritus of Beth Sholom Congregation and choir director of Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel of Elkins Park. This year’s participant choirs include the Adult Choir of Congregation Rodeph Shalom led by Cantor Erin Frankel; Adult Choir of Main Line Reform Temple led by Cantor Faryn Rudnick and Andrew Heller; Beth Israel Choir led by Robin Kerollis Napiecek; Choir of Congregation M’kor Shalom, Cherry Hill, New Jersey led by Rhoda Harrison; Cantors Assembly of the Delaware Valley and Choirs of the Old York Road Kehillah Jewish Community led by Cantor David F. Tilman; Makhelat Beth Sholom, Cherry Hill, NJ, led by Cantor Jen Cohen and Robert A.M. Ross; and Sharim V’Sharot: People of Song led by Dr. Elayne Robinson Grossman.
Born in Greece to a Sephardi family that emigrated soon afterward to the United States, Cantor Alberto Mizrahi has distinguished himself as an exponent of the Ashkenazi cantorial tradition. He is a graduate of the Jewish Theological Seminary’s Cantors Institute (now the H. L. Miller Cantorial School), where he studied with Hazzan David Kusevitsky as well as with numerous other leading figures in Jewish music. After firmly establishing an international reputation, he became a protégé of the legendary cantor Moshe Ganchoff, from whom he received much of the transmitted tradition. Cantor Mizrahi has appeared as guest cantor throughout the United States, Europe, and Israel—in synagogue services as well as in cantorial programs. His extensive list of appearances includes a concert at the Capitol Rotunda in Washington; Auschwitz liberation commemorations in Hanover and Hamburg; and festivals in Kraków and Vilnius. In 1990, in London, he made his Royal Festival Hall debut in Voice of Jewish Russia; and at the 2002 Spitalfields Festival in London’s Christ Church, Spitalfields, he appeared with the BBC Singers in a program of Jewish music spanning several centuries. He made his Chicago Symphony debut in Penderecki’s Seven Gates of Jerusalem, sang with the New York Philharmonic in Paul Schoenfield’s Klezmer Rondos, and sang the tenor solo in the world premiere of Samuel Adler’s The Challenge of the Muse, with the Juilliard Symphony Orchestra at Avery Fisher Hall in 2003.
