THE KIMMEL CENTER CULTURAL CAMPUS COMMISSIONS

A COLLABORATION BETWEEN OUTSIDE SOUND &

TALLER PUERTORRIQUEÑO ENTITLED

SONIDO DEL CORAZON

FREE presentation of Writing, Dance, and Visual Arts from

North Philadelphia students,

March 8, 2020

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, February 12, 2020) – The Kimmel Center Cultural Campus is proud to collaborate with Outside Sound and Taller Puertorriqueño to commission Sonido del Corazon, a free presentation of artistic expression featuring young students from North Philadelphia’s Puerto Rican and Latino communities.

Outside Sound, an instrumental jazz ensemble, is partnering with the Kimmel Center and Taller Puertorriqueño, a dynamic arts and culture organization in North Philadelphia, for a seven-week music writing and production residency. Guest teaching artists will be collaborating with Taller Puertorriqueño participants – young students from North Philadelphia's Puerto Rican and Latino communities – to create new music and mixed media works. These works, which will blend writing, performance, dance/choreography, and visual arts, will speak to their experiences, insights, and ideals. The finished products will be performed and put on display at the Kimmel Center's SEI Innovation Studio on Sunday, March 8, at 2:00 p.m.

“The Kimmel Center Cultural Campus is committed to engaging the region’s rich populations with the arts through diverse programming, education opportunities, free events, and more – cultivating an inclusive, impactful environment,” said Anne Ewers, President and CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “We are proud to collaborate with Outside Sound and Taller Puertorriqueño to provide an artistic voice to young students in North Philadelphia. They are our future, and these collaborations enable all of us to continue expanding access to the arts in our city with free, culturally enriching programs.”

Sonido del Corazon is part of the Kimmel Center’s extensive FREE programming offered all season long across the Cultural Campus. Designed to reflect the broad and diverse interests of Philadelphia audiences, FREE programming ranges from jazz to Latin music, Broadway showtunes to organ demonstrations, community chat-backs to seasonal happenings.
