STAGES & PERFORMANCES
The Kimmel Center believes in supporting and nurturing its Resident Companies, as well as the rich community of local arts organizations, to build a healthy and vibrant arts and culture scene in Philadelphia today and tomorrow.
In July 2013, the Kimmel Center Board of Directors formed a Strategic Planning Committee to build upon our past success and identify our key challenges and opportunities. Charting a clear path to achieve long-term financial stability and to serve its mission of supporting the Resident Companies and serving broad and diverse audiences across the region, the Kimmel Center recognized the need for a comprehensive campaign to achieve our goals and aspirations.
The Kimmel Center has entered into its second year of this Comprehensive Campaign established to support the preservation of our iconic buildings, ensuring that we can maintain world-class facilities for Philadelphia’s premier performing arts organizations while improving the patron experience and expanding audience reach and diversity.
In August 2015, the Kimmel Center conducted a Campus-wide Patron Satisfaction Survey and found that improving the seating in the Academy of Music would have the most extensive positive effect on the patron experience. In recognition of this need, the Kimmel Center began a fundraising campaign to replace the seats at the Academy of Music in order to improve patron comfort and experience as well as increase accessibility. We are nearing completion of the fundraising campaign and the new seats will be installed during Summer 2018.
For years an increasing number of patrons have been requesting the installation of an escalator to make access easier, quicker and safer from one level of the building to another. The Kimmel Center currently operates nine elevators which have the capacity to carry only half the number of patrons that typically attend a single performance in Verizon Hall. The alternative to elevator travel is the use of two staircases on the North and South sides of the building, problematic for many patrons for whom stair use is difficult or impossible.
Our Escalator Project will address these traffic and accessibility issues with significant improvements to the nine elevators and the construction of two escalators, one leading patrons from the Plaza Level to Tier One and the other from Tier One to Tier Two. These improvements will markedly enhance the customer experience by adding accessibility and ease for all of our patrons.
Without Bill Rouse’s passion, drive, determination and tireless efforts, the City of Philadelphia and our entire region would be vastly different and the Kimmel Center would not be a reality. As part of its Comprehensive Campaign, the Kimmel Center intends to create an in perpetuity endowment fund named in honor of Bill Rouse to improve and enhance the world-class facilities which Bill’s leadership created. The Kimmel Center will rename the Broad Street Entrance in Bill’s honor.
