Exploration of Social Change through the history and traditions of Jazz
4th-6th Grade Students
Jazz For Freedom explores the local and global history of Black American Music, better known as Jazz, and encourages creative expression. Taught by experienced teaching artists, students are first engaged with a pre-show workshop at your school introducing students to Jazz. The highlight of Jazz For Freedom is a field trip to the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts to see an interactive performance featuring music, dance, and commentary on social change throughout history. Following the performance, teaching artists return to your school for a post-show workshop where students get a deeper exploration into Social Change and its connection to the arts. Finally, classroom teachers are empowered to continue the discussion through provided study guides connecting Jazz For Freedom to academic standards in Social Studies and Language Arts.
