FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, February 10, 2016) –– The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts welcomes six-time Grammy Award® winners, The Chieftains, to the Merriam Theater on Sunday, March 13 at 3:00 p.m. for an early St. Patrick’s Day celebration of reinvented traditional Irish music. Formed in Ireland in 1962 by Paddy Maloney, the internationally acclaimed band has been touring for more than 50 years and will bring their blend of music, humor and step dancing to delight Philadelphia audiences.

“We can think of no better way to kick off St. Patrick’s Day celebrations than with this highly entertaining and talented group of Irish performers,” said Anne Ewers, President & CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “After more than 50 years of making music together, the group continues to delight new and old audiences alike with this fabulous genre of music.”

Throughout their legendary career, The Cheiftains have earned 6 Grammy Awards® and 18 nominations. Throughout the past five decades, The Chieftains have inspired and continue to inspire interest in Celtic music worldwide through collaborations with legendary performers such as The Rolling Stones, Sting, Van Morrison, and Ziggy Marley.  Ambassadors of Celtic music and Irish traditions, The Chieftains have produced 40 albums.
