LEGENDARY EMMY AND TONY AWARD WINNER HAL HOLBROOK PERFORMS THE CRITICALLY-ACCLAIMED MARK TWAIN TONIGHT! AT THE KIMMEL CENTER CULTURAL CAMPUS, MAY 4, 2017

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, March 23, 2017) –– Emmy- and Tony Award®-winning actor Hal Holbrook brings his one-man play Mark Twain Tonight!to the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts’ Merriam Theater for one night only on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. Now 92 years old, Holbrook has performed Mark Twain Tonight! more than 2,200 times over 62 years, adjusting the material to stay relevant and topical. Holbrook portrays literary icon Mark Twain by reciting excerpts from many of his works from his career, including favorites like The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

“Hal Holbrook brings to life many of Mark Twain’s wonderful works of literature that continue to withstand the test of time,” said Anne Ewers, President and CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts.  “We are excited to see Holbrook continue to make audiences laugh after so many years.”

Hal Holbrook first received critical acclaim for Mark Twain Tonight! in 1954 after developing the show while incollege. Following successful runs both off-Broadway and then on Broadway, Holbrook won a Tony Award® for his portrayal of Twain in 1966. Mark Twain Tonight! was revived on Broadway in both 1977 and 2005 and continued to tour around the country, with Holbrook reciting from his repertoire of over fifteen hours of memorized Twain material.

Other upcoming performances on the Kimmel Center Campus include Chris Botti (May 6, 2017, Merriam Theater), Marc Maron: The Too Real Tour (May 12, 2017, Merriam Theater), and Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story (June 24 – July 9, Perelman Theater).
