MEXICO CITY ROCK BAND MEXRRISSEY PLAYS MORRISSEY’S GREATEST HITS IN SUPERCHARGED TRIBUTE, OCTOBER 29, 2016

"A delightful horn-infused love letter to Morrissey’s best solo work.” – Uncut

“A brilliant, vibrant take on the songs.” – The Independent

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, August 25, 2016) –– In Mexico, Morrissey is more than just a musician; his songs of love, loss, and longing have nestled their way into the hearts of generations. That love has resurfaced with a new energy through Mexican rock band Mexrrissey, a team of musical gunslingers from Mexico’s hottest bands. The group has taken the greatest hits of iconic artists Morrissey and The Smiths and reinvented them with Mexican flare. For one-night-only, these hits will be performed at the Kimmel Center’s Merriam Theater, on October 29 at 8:00 p.m. as part of the Kimmel Center’s Philly ¡En Vivo! series.

“It takes great talent to reimagine beloved songs from a new cultural perspective and Mexrrissey has found a knack for that ability,” said Ed Cambron, Executive Vice President of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “The group provides a vibrant new twist on these songs with Mexican embellishments that help us to appreciate the music in new ways. The perfect addition to our Philly ¡En Vivo! series!”

Mexrrissey, comprised of stars from Mexico’s rock and pop worlds, are known for their brass and string interpretations of Morrissey’s iconic songs. Formed in Mexico City, Mexrrissey has had an incredible trajectory since their first show in Mexico City in 2015. Rising to fame, their first performance was soon followed by a sold-out mainstage debut at the Barbican in the La Linea Festival in London. A United Kingdom tour and additional triumphant shows at BAM in New York and the Regent in Los Angeles continued their journey into the spotlight.

Mexrrissey performs live with an abundance of the top players in the Mexico music scene including underground legend Chetes (Zurdok) on guitar, Jay De La Cueva (Moderatto /Titán) on bass, Ceci Bastida (Tijuana No) on keyboards, Adan Jodorowsky (Adanowsky) on guitar, Liber Teran (Los de Abajo) on guitar, Alejandro Flores (Café Tacuba’s favourite violin player), Alex Gonzales on trumpet (Twin Tones), Ricardo Najera on drums (Furland), Sergio Mendoza and Jacob Valenzuela (both from Calexico) on vibes and accordion and trumpet. Vocals are shared between four members of the band who also include flavors from a range of traditional instruments.

Other upcoming events on the Kimmel Center Campus include;Lampedusa: Concerts for Refugees (October 19, 2016, Merriam Theater), the Chucho Valdes – Joe Lovano Quintet (November 4, 2016, Merriam Theater), Hasan Minhaj: Homecoming King (December 2, 2016, Perelman Theater), and Balé Folclórico da Bahía (February 17, 2017, Merriam Theater).
