Before MISTY COPELAND, premier s o l o i s t and sole Black member with the elite American Ballet Theatre, JOAN MYERS BROWN, classically trained African American dancer and founder of the noted Philadelphia based dance company PHILADANCO and The Philadelphia School of Dance Arts blazed the path as an early maverick. Set for a January 2012 publish date, Brenda Dixon Gottschild, author of The Black Dancing Body, pens the forthcoming Joan Myers Brown & The Audacious Hope of the Black Ballerina: A Biohistory of American Performance – a testament to Brown’s groundbreaking career and achievements. Joan Myers Brown’s PHILADANCO kicks off its hometown season at The Kimmel Center this fall with a new work, “Watching Go By, the day,” by acclaimed choreographer Hope Boykin.
